Creating a Showreel Scene: Getting Some SWEET Shots

'Unusual Exchange' marks a significant milestone in my progression as a video creator, thanks to the invaluable collaboration with my good friend and actor, Greg Chipman.

Together, we proudly formed 'Global Kapture Productions' as our creative platform for future collaborative scripted projects. Exciting times ahead! 😁

The idea

The concept for this project originated during one of our brainstorming sessions, where we discussed various ideas for upcoming projects. Given Greg's acting prowess, we decided to craft a scene that he would feature in, treating it as a technical exercise to push our creative boundaries that could be used as a showreel scene for both myself and the actors involved.

The scene

'Thomas' played by Greg Chipman. Actor in the sweet shop.

Set within a charming sweet shop, the scene revolves around Griffin, a larger-than-life character, offering Thomas (played by Greg Chipman) a pill that grants him unparalleled skills in any chosen field.

This intriguing premise delves into the notion of the shopkeeper using the façade of a sweet shop to conceal his illicit activities, adding a layer of depth to the narrative.

Before diving into production, we invested considerable effort in pre-production tasks. This involved writing and refining the script, scouting suitable locations, and beginning the casting process for Griffin. After a thorough review of the self-tapes submitted by talented actors, we were thrilled to cast Dominic O'Byrne in the role of the eccentric shopkeeper.

To visually map out the scene, we created detailed storyboards to help bring our vision to life. These storyboards served as a blueprint for our shot list, ensuring we captured every angle and perspective necessary to convey the story effectively.

We also took the time to organise the shot list in a manner that optimised efficiency during the shooting day.

On the day of the shoot, with the shop closed to the public, we had ample time to set up and prepare. As directors, Greg and I wasted no time in marking out positions for the talent and rehearsing shots, utilising the space to bring the story to life.

That's a wrap

The shoot was a total success! Greg and Dominic nailed their acting, and Clark on sound did an amazing job. Steve, who helped with loading the clapper board also kept everything running smoothly.

After multiple rounds of editing and tough decisions, we finally had a draft ready. I then focused on fine-tuning the edit, adding sound design, colour corrections, and grading.

Greg and I had a great time creating a showreel scene and we are beyond thrilled with how our first joint project turned out!

We want to give a big shoutout to everyone who helped make it possible.

Thank you all! 👏
